We have received some queries about creating new levels for
Bunnies. There is a complete tutorial in the works,
but until that is finished, here are some tips for
prospective level designers.
- Bunnies maps are truecolor images. Each map is
550x400 pixels. The Bunnies editor will import
images in 8,24, and 32 bit formats. (BMP,PNG, PCX, TGA, LBM)
- The map mask is an 8-bit grayscale image that
represents to opacity of the level. A value of 0 (black)
represents full transparency.
A value of 255 (white) signifies complete opacity. At this
time, the editor will only import 8-bit images for the mask.
- Bunnies music is in a special MOD format. The
editor can import MOD, S3M, IT, and XM. Note that more than
8 voices in a mod
will cause game performance problems on some systems.
Currently, if you do not import music for your level, it
will have no music. This
will be fixed in the next release.
- Bunnies maps are logically divided into a
22x16 grid. Each grid square is 25x25 pixels in size. Each
square can have one of six
attributes:
- 0 - Air - Bunnies can pass this square.
- 1 - Solid - This square blocks the passage of a bunny.
- 2 - Liquid - Bunnies can swim in liquid. Bunnies tend
to float upward while swimming.
- 3 - Ice - Like the solid block, but bunnies will slide
on the ice.
- 4 - Bounce - This is a spring square. It will launch
bunnies into the air.
- 5 - Kill - This square will chunk any bunny that
touches it.
The block map can be modified directly in the editor by
pressing the "Edit Map" toggle. You may then paint the block
map directly
onto the level.
- Bunnies maps can contain textual information.
The "Set Info" button in the editor will allow you to
specify a map name, author's name,
a URL, and up to 256 characters for comments. This
information is displayed in the level picker when starting a
new game.
- Bunnies can only load maps from the "Maps"
directory of the game. Make sure to save your maps there.
- The GUI Skins in Bunnies are currently
undergoing an internal change, and are not eligible for
modification at this
time. We are researching the best way to skin
Bunnies. :)
The
Bunnies editor does not allow the creation of images for maps. They must be created externally and imported into the editor. For Windows users that do not have an image editing utility, we recommend
The GIMP, a powerful
free program that contains features found in other image tools costing hundreds of dollars. Most (all?) Linux distributions come with The GIMP.
